Climbing Mt K – Day 0 & Day 1, May 16 & 17 2011

Day 0

Flew into KK very late in the night. Checked in at Summer Lodge for a good night sleep, which unfortunately I didn’t get because I don’t adapt well to strange beds. The room was simple and clean though the bed sheets looked old and well worn. We had a private bathroom and the room was A/C-ed.

Day 1

Our journey to Kinabalu Park won’t start until 11.30am so we had a VERY simple complimentary breakfast at the hostel and then went out to explore.

- White bread with 3 spreads to choose - butter, peanut butter or jam; beans; coffee, tea and water

Summer Lodge is located right on Jalan Gaya, the area where every corner you turn you’d spot at least one backpacker hostel. This area is very popular with tourist/backpackers because it’s about a 15-min drive from the airport, tons of cheap accm, almost every bank has a branch here, small eateries everywhere, a few shopping complexes, bars (there’s one just outside our hostel!) and it’s right beside the sea with access to several small islands nearby by boat.

- Boats for rent to nearby islands

- The bar right outside us

We found KK to be so much cleaner than Penang and immediately liked this little town.

- On the way to K Park, superb weather

- Lunch: Sabah style Char Mee, Fried Yellow Noodles. They eat it with chilli & ketchup!

- Suspension bridge over the river

We finally arrived at K Park and the weather turned cloudy. The moment we stepped into our hostel it started to rain. There goes my plan of exploring the park..

- Grace Hostel, we were in Room 4 bunk E & F. Nice and cozy. We were the only two girls with four other guys in the room.

- Heavy mist in the park when we went for dinner

- Dinner Buffet at Balsam restaurant, hearty meal before the climb

Met a guy from Taiwan (i.e. Ping3 aka Lobster) who was climbing alone and was bunking in the same room. We got along well so we invited him to join us the next day since he hadn't decided if he's taking Mesilau or Timpohon. He turned out to be great company and an experienced climber so it was lucky of us to know him.

After dinner, I was having a hard time trying to keep my bag as light as possible.. another sleepless and cold night...
